Shinagawa is where a lot of trips begin or end — the Shinkansen, the airport trains, the commute. Sarabeth's, on the fourth floor of the station building next door, is the place I'd point you to for a slow, properly cooked breakfast before you get on any of them.

Short answer

Sarabeth's Shinagawa is on the 4th floor of atre Shinagawa, about 1 minute from JR Shinagawa Station. Open from 9:30; no reservations for breakfast (dinner only, from 18:00). Expect a 5% service charge, and cards are accepted.

What I ate

I went for breakfast and got the plate in the photo: soft scrambled eggs, thick bacon, three small pancakes, a handful of greens, with maple syrup and whipped butter on the side. It is the classic American-diner-but-nicer plate, and it is done well — the eggs are creamy rather than dry, the bacon has some bite, and the pancakes are light enough that you still want the greens.

I only visited once, so I can speak for this plate and not for the whole menu. The official breakfast menu I checked online lists other things — French toast, eggs Benedict, avocado toast — and menus change, so ask what is served that morning.

FUMI's tip

Go early, before the mid-morning crowd. The room fills up after the first hour, and breakfast is walk-in only, so arriving close to opening is the easiest way to avoid a wait.

Who it suits

It suits a last morning before a train or flight, or a first morning after arriving with luggage — you never leave the station building. It is less suited to a very quick bite: this is a sit-down restaurant, and the prices reflect that.
